What is an MRI scan?

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a powerful medical imaging technique that utilizes strong, magnetic fields and radio waves to create intricate, detailed images of your body's internal structures. Unlike X-rays, MRIs excel at visualizing soft tissues, making them invaluable for examining the brain, spinal cord, muscles, joints, and organs. We will assess your medical history and any potential risks before proceeding.

Questions? We have answers.

When is an MRI scan beneficial?

MRI scans excel in various situations:

  • Diagnosing and monitoring conditions: From tumors and inflammation to injuries, infections, and blood vessel abnormalities, MRIs provide valuable insights for accurate diagnosis and procedure planning.
  • Guiding procedures: MRIs effectively guide biopsies, surgeries, and other interventions, ensuring precision and minimizing risks.
  • Monitoring disease progression: MRIs track the progress of conditions and procedure effectiveness, allowing for adjustments as needed.
What is an MRI arthrogram?

Following injection of contrast directly into the joint, an MRI can be performed to enhance visibility of the smaller structures in the joint, such as to diagnose labral tears. Arthrograms help diagnose joint conditions such as tears or inflammation more accurately.

What can I expect during an MRI scan at Clarity Care?

MRI scans, which are safe and painless, use a strong magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed images of the inside of your body. When undergoing an MRI, you can expect the following:

  • Preparation: Before an MRI scan, you may be asked to remove any metal objects, jewelry, or clothing that contains metal as it may interfere with the imaging process. You will also be asked to wear a medical gown for the procedure.
  • Contrast dye: In some cases, a contrast dye may be injected into a vein to help enhance the images taken during the MRI scan, This dye may cause a warm sensation or a metallic taste in the mouth, but these side effects are usually temporary.
  • The scan: During the MRI scan, you will lie on a table that slides into the MRI machine, which is a large, tunnel-like structure. The machine will make loud knocking or buzzing sounds during the scan (so you may be given earplugs or headphones to block out the noise). It is important to remain still during the scan to ensure clear images.
  • Duration: MRI scans can take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour or more, depending on the area of the body being scanned and the complexity of the imaging needed.
  • After the scan: Once the MRI scan is complete, you will be able to resume normal activities. The images will be reviewed by one of Clarity Care's highly trained radiologists, who will interpret the results and send a report your healthcare provider.
  • You may access imaging reports in our imaging patient portal "Patient Connect".
