Why should I get a Full Body MRI Scan?

A Full Body MRI Scan is a proactive way to monitor your health. It helps identify potential issues early—before symptoms appear—so you can take steps to prevent or treat health conditions early. This scan gives you a clearer picture of your health, providing valuable insights for peace of mind.

  • Cancer Detection: According to the American Cancer Society, when cancer is detected early before symptoms appear, the 5-year survival rate is nearly 90% for many cancers, compared to just 20-30% when diagnosed in later stages.
  • Heart Disease: According to the CDC, heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the U.S. Early detection of cardiovascular disease, including plaque buildup in arteries, a major contributor to heart attacks, can reduce the risk of heart disease-related mortality by over 50% with timely lifestyle changes and medical intervention.
  • Brain Tumors: A study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology found that MRI screenings in high-risk populations (e.g., those with a family history of brain tumors) can detect abnormalities 2-3 years before symptoms develop. Multiple Sclerosis (MS): Identifying MS earlier allows for early intervention that can slow disease progression.
  • Osteoporosis Risk: The National Osteoporosis Foundation reports that 1 in 2 women and 1 in 4 men over the age of 50 will suffer a fracture due to osteoporosis. Finding bone density issues earlier helps people take steps to improve bone health before fractures occur. Bone Fractures: Full Body MRI scans can also identify stress fractures or other bone abnormalities before they become symptomatic, reducing the risk of more severe injuries. In a study of athletes, MRI scans identified over 80% of stress fractures before they became clinically evident.
  • Sports Injuries: A study published in Sports Medicine found that MRI scans can identify up to 90% of musculoskeletal injuries, allowing for more accurate and timely treatment, before injuries worsen. Osteoarthritis: A National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases study shows MRI can detect the early stages of joint degeneration, often before symptoms of arthritis appear, again allowing for earlier treatment and prevention.
What is a Full Body MRI Scan?

A Full Body MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) Scan is a comprehensive, non-invasive diagnostic tool that provides a detailed picture of your body's health, from head to knees. MRIs use powerful magnets and radio waves to generate clear, high-resolution pictures of internal structures, including organs, bones, tissues, and blood vessels, to help detect abnormalities or diseases early, giving you peace of mind and the ability to address concerns before they become serious.

How Does a Full Body MRI Scan Work?

Preparation:
When you arrive at Clarity Care, our team will explain the process, make sure you're comfortable, and ensure that all safety protocols are in place. You'll be asked to wear a medical gown and remove any metal objects, jewelry, or clothing containing metal as it interferes with the imaging process.

The Scan:
During the MRI scan, you will lie on a table that slides into the MRI machine, which is a large, tunnel-like structure. The machine will make loud knocking or buzzing sounds during the scan, so you will be provided earplugs or headphones to block out the noise. It is important to remain still during the scan to ensure clear images. The magnets and radio waves create detailed images of your body's internal structures. The process typically lasts 60 to 90 minutes.

Follow-Up:
After the scan, one of our expert radiologists will review the images and arrange a follow-up consultation with you. This can be done in person or via video call. During the consultation, we'll discuss any findings and answer any questions you might have.

Results:
You and your doctors will receive a comprehensive report of your scan, with any relevant findings explained in detail. If further action is needed, our team will help guide you through your next steps and discuss any recommendations with your primary care physician.

Adding Additional Tests:
If you are adding in the Body Composition Scan, Low-dose CT Lung Cancer Screening, and Calcium Scoring Test, plan to be at our office for an additional 30-45 minutes. These tests use different imaging equipment to provide even more key insights to your lungs, heart, and body's muscle and bone mass. Each is explained in more detail below. Our subspecialized radiologist will review these results with you during your follow-up consultation.

What is a Body Composition Scan?

Simply knowing your weight doesn't tell you much about your health. Two people can weigh the same, but one could have a much higher body fat percentage of body fat, putting them at a greater risk for various health issues. A Body Composition Scan provides a more nuanced picture of your health by revealing:

  • Whether you're carrying too much fat (especially visceral fat, which surrounds your organs and can increase the risk of metabolic disease).
  • Whether your muscle mass is in a healthy range (a higher muscle mass can help boost metabolism and promote better overall health).
  • The health of your bones, which is important for preventing osteoporosis or fractures later in life.

Body Composition Scans are typically performed using Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) technology, which is ultimately a low-dose X-ray that measures bone density, fat mass, and lean muscle mass. It works by sending two different energy X-ray beams through the body and measures how much energy is absorbed by bones and soft tissue. The scan calculates the exact amounts of fat, muscle, and bone.

What is a CT Lung Cancer Screening?

A CT Lung Cancer Screening is a fast, low-dose CT often paired with a Full Body MRI Scan in comprehensive screenings. It can reduce lung cancer mortality by 20% in high-risk individuals, such as smokers or those with a family history of lung cancer (National Cancer Institute). Learn more about CT scans in general here.

What is a Calcium Scoring Test?

A Calcium Scoring Test is a low-dose CT that is often used with a Full Body MRI Scan to reveal coronary artery calcification, a sign of increased risk for heart attacks. Studies show that detecting early cardiovascular risks can decrease heart attack and stroke rates by 20-40% with appropriate intervention. Learn more about CT scans in general here.

Will any of the scans hurt?

No, none of the tests hurt. We provide leg cushions and warm blankets for people who may feel uncomfortable lying on the MRI table for an extended time.

Can I drive after my tests?

Yes, you can generally drive after any of these tests unless you were sedated. If you were provided sedation, you would require a driver.

Pricing and Insurance:

Insurance typically does not cover a Full Body MRI Scan and other screening tests, unless clinically recommended due to symptoms and health history. However, patients may use their HSA or FSA to pay for the scans.
