What is a CT scan?

A CT scan, or computed tomography scan, is a powerful medical imaging technique that utilizes X-rays and computer processing to create intricate cross-sectional images of the body. Offering far more depth than traditional X-rays, CT scans aid in diagnosing and monitoring various medical conditions.

Most CT scans take just a few minutes, and same day appointments are usually available.

CT Imaging: Step by Step

1.

During a CT scan at Clarity Care, you will lie comfortably on a table that moves through a specialized scanner.

2.

An X-ray tube rotates around you, emitting narrow beams that pass through your body at different angles.

3.

Detectors capture the intensity of these beams, creating data points used to construct detailed images.

4.

In some cases, an intravenous and/or oral contrast agent might be used to enhance specific structures for better visualization.

5.

Your study will be read by one of our radiologists and available to your doctor typically within one business day. We ask that you give your doctor a day or two to review and share any significant findings to you.

CT Scans FAQ

CT scans excel in a range of situations:

  • Diagnosing and monitoring diseases: From cancer and heart disease to lung disorders and bone fractures, CT scans provide valuable insights for accurate diagnosis and procedure planning.
  • Assessing injuries and trauma: In emergencies, CT scans rapidly reveal internal bleeding, fractures, or organ damage, enabling swift and appropriate medical intervention.
  • Guiding procedure and surgeries: CT scans monitor cancer procedure response, allowing doctors to adjust plans as needed.
  • Non-invasive alternative: CT scans often eliminate the need for exploratory surgeries, reducing discomfort and recovery time.
  • Head
  • Neck
  • Chest
  • Abdomen and Pelvis
  • Bones
  • Spine

CT can also be used as a screening test:

  • Coronary Artery Calcium Scoring
  • CT Lung Cancer Screening
  • You may qualify for a low-dose CT lung cancer screening if you:
  • Are aged 50-80
  • Are a current smoker or have quit within the last 15 years
  • Have a 20 pack-year smoking history (e.g., 1 pack per day for 20 years)

Note: Talk to your doctor to confirm your eligibility and determine if screening is right for you.

Computed tomography (CT) scans use X-ray technology to create detailed images of the inside of the body. Here are some things you can expect if you undergo a CT scan:

  • Preparation: Depending on the area of the body being scanned, you may be asked to avoid eating or drinking for a certain period before the scan. You may also be asked to remove any metal objects or jewelry that could interfere with the imaging process.
  • Contrast dye: In some cases, a contrast dye may be injected into the vein to enhance images taken during the CT scan. The dye may cause a warm sensation or a metallic taste in the mouth, but these side effects are generally temporary.
  • The scan: During the scan, you will lie on a table that slides into the CT machine, which is shaped like a large donut. The machine will rotate around you, taking multiple X-Ray images from different angles. You may be asked to hold your breath at certain points to minimize movement and ensure clear images.
  • Duration: A CT scan usually takes only a few minutes to complete, although the entire process, including preparation and waiting for results, may take longer.
  • After the scan: Once the scan is complete, you will be able to resume your normal activities. The images will be reviewed by one of Clarity Care’s expert radiologists, who will interpret the results and send a report to your primary healthcare provider.
  • You may access imaging reports in our imaging patient portal.
